1969 Camaro Z28 “Rolling thunder”

This 1969 Camaro Z28 has undergone an extensive engine and drive train swap.

The car has a Chevrolet Big block with 502 CI of displacement. Fuel is fed by way of Mallory adjustable Fuel Pressure regulator, through an 850CFM Holley 4 barrel, Dart Intake and Heads. Spark is provided by an MSD Adjustable Multi-Spark Ignition, and Mallory Uni-Lite Distributor. The cooling is taken care of by an aluminum radiator, and water pump, with all braided lines.

This monster horsepower is transferred through a Richmond 5 Speed gearbox, to a Strange Engineering rear end, and axles. Traction bars, and Huge Mickey Thompson L60-15 tires wrapped around Centerline Wheels put the power to the ground. Exhaust is handled by a set of Hooker Alumicoat headers, and a 3″ Flowmaster exhaust system.

All of this yields a sub 10 second car, and requires the use of a strip ready Roll cage.

From Cruise nights to the strip, this is a fabulous car!

Hello fellow Shelby and Ford fans! What I am selling here is a very very nice re-creation of the famous 1965 Shelby GT350R based upon a very nice 1965 Mustang 2+2. A little background on this car. I purchased this car in October of 2003 from a father and son team from Michigan who had spent over 2 years completing a ground up restoration.

The father had worked for Fords Racing division during the 1960′s and was a major stickler for even the smallest of details. Countless hours of research were done to make sure every detail had been covered from the exact paint color to the correct color coding the factory did on suspension components. All of the body panels on the car, front fenders, rear quarter and door panels were replaced with only Ford OEM factory parts.

These were not only hard to find but also of the very best quality available. The suspension is of all original style with the correctly relocated front control arms with the proper 2″ lowering front and rear. There are Koni shocks at all four corners with new severe duty leaf and coil springs. The car also has both front and rear anti-sway bars with urethane bushings. The rear differential is the proper and correct Ford 9″ with a 3.89 Detroit Locker with 28 spline axles.

The transmission is a Tremec five-speed road racing transmission with a Hurst shifter to duplicate what the race cars used. Front disc and rear drums with a dual reservoir master cylinder were used as was the Shelby cars. The wheels are the correct American Racing 15 x 7 D-spoke Torque Thrusts which are mounted with Hoosier 26.5 x 8.5-15 used in open track events.

The interior has a weld in four-point roll bar with the rear seat delete which was replaced with the original “R” model fiberglass shelf mounting the spare tire. The dash is mounted with original style Stewart Warner gauges in an “R” model cluster. It also has a Kenwood AM-FM cassette stereo with CD changer controls. Now about the engine!

When I first purchased this car it had a 289 HI-PO which was quite nice but not nearly powerful enough. I entered this car in an HSR Vintage Racing event and it ran well but was somewhat underpowered so for the next event I sold the 289 and purchased a 5.0 302-345 HP crate motor to be more competitive.

I very much enjoyed this combination for two further events with absolutely no problems mechanical or otherwise including the season-ending race at the historic Sebring Raceway! I then removed the 302 and purchased from Ford Racing their 5.0L/ 302-347 CID-450 HP “Z” Head Crate engine at a cost of nearly $7,000.00 along with a new Ford Racing billet flywheel.

This is the engine now in the car and it only has about 300 easy miles. It is powerful, beautiful and reliable and starts easily and runs smooth and cool as it also has an aluminum racing radiator with built in heat exchanger purchased from Cobra Automotive at a cost of $750.00. The car also has a separate oil cooler mounted in front of the radiator. The car is street legal with all working lights and wipers if proper tires are mounted.

It is also eligible and approved for S.A.A.C. as well as HSR racing. As would be expected of a car that has been driven both on the track and street there are some nicks, scratches and blemishes but nothing at all very serious and actually quite minor.

Please ask any questions you like and I can either show the car to potential bidders or send additional pictures if desired. This car is stunning and very polarizing when viewed in person! The owner reserves the right to end this auction early as this vehicle is listed for sale elsewhere.

Webmaster’s note:
This car was for sale on ebay and this information including the photos is published here with the owner’s permission.

###
